What Type of Tile Can Be Used Outside?
For an outdoor area, we’d usually start with porcelain. It's dense, hard-wearing, and has low water absorption, which makes it a good choice for patios, alfresco areas, balconies, paths, and pool surrounds. We also stock 20mm external porcelain pavers made for outdoor use.
Natural stone can work outside too, but it needs more care. Stone varies by material and finish, so it needs the right sealer and cleaner. We’d always check the individual product page and talk it through with your tiler before using a stone or stone-look finish in a wet, exposed area.
The main thing is not to choose based on material alone. Check the product specification for wording such as suitable for outdoor use, then look at the slip rating, finish, thickness, and where it will be installed. For example, the Imperial Crest external paver is 20mm thick and has a P5 slip rating, while some other tiles are listed with a P4 rating. The right rating depends on the area, especially if it will get wet.
A covered alfresco, pool surround, front entry, balcony, and open patio all have different demands. Your tiler should also check the surface, drainage, fall, adhesive, and grout. If you’re not sure which tiles suit your space, send us the product link and your plans before you order.
