Bathroom Basins
Buildmat supplies bathroom basins to renovators, builders and homeowners across Australia from ADP, Caroma, Alma, Nero, Keva, Johnson Suisse, Oliveri and Fienza. The range covers every mount type suited to Australian bathrooms — above counter basins, undermount basins, wall hung basins, semi-inset basins, semi-recessed basins and powder room basins — in ceramic, concrete, terrazzo, stone look and solid surface construction. Filter by mount type, shape, material or colour to narrow things down, or read our bathroom basin buying guide for a full breakdown.
Shop bathroom basins by mount type
- Above counter basins — sit on top of the benchtop or vanity surface. The basin becomes a design feature rather than something that disappears into the joinery. Works best with a tall basin mixer to clear the rim height, and suits timber, stone and floating vanities where you want the basin to do visual work. Our most popular mount type for feature bathrooms and powder rooms.
- Undermount / under counter basins — sit below the benchtop with the rim concealed under the stone or surface material. Gives a clean, seamless look and makes wiping down the vanity easier since there's no rim catching water. Suits family bathrooms and any space where practicality and a streamlined finish are the priority. Requires a solid benchtop material — stone, engineered stone or solid surface — that can be cut and polished at the opening.
- Wall hung / wall-mounted basins — fixed directly to the wall with no vanity underneath. Keeps the floor clear, makes small bathrooms and ensuites feel more open, and pairs with a wall mounted basin mixer for a clean, minimal result. The practical call for compact bathrooms where floor space is tight.
- Semi-inset basins — partially recessed into the benchtop with the front face projecting forward. Gives more internal basin depth than a fully undermounted basin while keeping a lower profile than an above counter bowl. A good compromise in bathrooms where you want usable depth without the visual height of an above counter basin.
- Semi-recessed basins — partially recessed into a shallower vanity, with the front of the basin projecting beyond the cabinet edge. Suits narrower wall hung vanities where a full undermount wouldn't fit the depth.
- Inset / countertop basins — drop into a pre-cut hole in the benchtop with the rim sitting flush or just above the surface. Common in older Australian bathrooms and practical for retrofitting into existing joinery without replacing the whole vanity.
- Powder room basins — compact basins sized for guest bathrooms and powder rooms where space is tight and the basin is used lightly. Available in above counter, wall hung and semi-recessed formats.
Shop basins by shape
- Round basins — the most popular shape we sell. Works above almost any vanity style and pairs well with round mirrors, curved tapware and arch cabinetry. Available from compact 300mm circles through to wider 500mm bowls.
- Pill basins — rounded rectangle. Suits wider vanities and double basins where a round basin would look undersized, and contemporary bathrooms with more rectangular proportions.
- Arch basins — flat base, curved top. Architectural profile that suits contemporary and minimalist bathrooms.
- Rectangular basins — clean, structured profile. Suits contemporary and Japandi bathrooms and works well undermounted into stone benchtops.
- Square basins — sharp corners and a structured look. Suits modern and industrial bathrooms.
- Fluted basins — vertical ribbed exterior detail. A strong match for fluted vanities and Japandi or coastal bathrooms where texture is part of the brief.
- Oval basins — softer than rectangular, more elongated than round. Filter to the round and pill collections for oval options.
What we'd check before you buy
Bathroom basin mount type vs vanity depth
The most common mismatch we see is an undermount basin ordered for a vanity that isn't deep enough to accommodate the full basin depth below the benchtop. Standard undermount basins need a vanity with at least 460mm–500mm depth to sit correctly. If your vanity is shallower — common in wall-hung designs at 400mm depth — a semi-recessed or above counter basin is usually the right call. Check the basin's overall depth against your vanity depth before ordering.
Tap holes
Basins come in no tap hole (for wall mixers), 1 tap hole (for a single basin mixer), and 3 tap hole (for separate hot, cold and spout) configurations. Most Australian bathrooms use a single basin mixer through a 1 tap hole basin. If you're going wall-mounted tapware, you need a no tap hole basin. Getting this wrong means drilling into the basin after the fact, which isn't recommended on ceramic or stone basins. Confirm your tapware type before ordering.
Overflow vs no overflow
Many above counter ceramic basins include an overflow — a secondary drain hole near the top of the basin that prevents spills if the basin fills up. Some designs, particularly concrete and statement basins, don't include an overflow. This affects which basin waste you need — click-clack wastes for basins with overflow, pop-up or plug-and-chain for those without. Order the waste at the same time as the basin so the finish and type align.
Above counter basin height and tapware reach
An above counter basin adds the bowl height to the benchtop height — a 150mm-deep basin on a 850mm vanity puts the rim at 1000mm. Combined with a standard 150mm short basin mixer, the spout may not clear the basin rim or reach the centre of the bowl. Tall basin mixers (200mm–250mm spout height) are the standard pairing for above counter basins. Check the basin internal depth and the mixer reach before committing to both.
Vitreous china vs ceramic
Both are fired clay products — vitreous china is fired at higher temperatures, making it denser, less porous and more resistant to staining than standard ceramic. Most quality basins from Caroma, ADP and Johnson Suisse are vitreous china construction. The distinction matters more for basins without glaze protection, particularly in high-use family bathrooms.
Bottle traps
Wall hung basins and above counter basins on open vanities expose the plumbing underneath, which means the bottle trap becomes visible. We stock basin wastes and bottle traps in matching finishes to the basin mixer — matte black, brushed brass, chrome and brushed nickel. Factor this into your finish planning so the exposed plumbing matches rather than clashing with the tapware.
Bathroom basin prices at Buildmat
Ceramic and vitreous china basins in gloss white or matte white are the most accessible starting point, from around $90–$200 for standard undermount and above counter shapes.
Coloured ceramic and fluted ceramic basins sit in the $150–$300 range. Concrete and terrazzo basins run from around $200 to $500 depending on size and finish complexity.
Premium stainless steel basins (Nero Opal range) sit at the higher end of the range. Whatever the budget, factor in a basin waste and basin mixer as separate costs.
