There's no single right size for a wall hung vanity - it comes down to the room, the rough-in, and how many people use it.

• 450mm –  perfect for ultra-compact powder rooms and guest bathrooms>
• 600mm - small bathrooms, powder rooms and tight ensuites. Enough bench space without dominating the room.

• 750mm - the sweet spot for a single-basin ensuite. More storage, still compact.

• 900mm wall hung vanity - the most popular size we sell. Works in an ensuite, main bathroom or generous powder room.

• 1200mm - suits a bigger ensuite or main bathroom. Room for a double vanity or one large basin with bench either side.

• 1500mm - a strong pick for a shared main bathroom or master ensuite used by two people.

What we'd check before you buy a floating vanity

Wall framing: A wall hung vanity needs solid backing behind the wall - timber noggins or a steel plate, not just plasterboard - to carry the weight of the cabinet, basin and everything you'll put in it. This needs to be sorted at framing stage, so it's worth flagging to your builder before the walls go up, not after.

Mounting height: Standard mounting height is 850-900mm from the floor to the top of the vanity. Because it's wall hung, you can set this slightly higher or lower at install if you're taller than average or need an accessible height - something you don't get with a floor mount unit.

Basin and top configuration: Cabinet only lets you pick your own basin and countertop separately - useful if you want a specific stone top or solid surface top to match the rest of the room. With-top options come with a ceramic or stone top and basin already paired, which is the simpler choice if you don't need to match anything. In tight ensuites, we'd check the basin doesn't sit so far forward that the tapware ends up too close to the mirror - a common clash once the vanity's actually on the wall.

Drawers vs open shelves: Soft-close drawers are standard across most of our range and hold up better day to day than open shelves - things stay put and stay visible. If you're after a double bowl vanity for a shared bathroom, check the drawer layout works around two basins before you order, since plumbing usually takes up some of the middle storage.

When a freestanding vanity makes more sense

A wall hung vanity isn't always the right call. If the wall behind your vanity is solid masonry or you're not keen on cutting into tiles to check for framing, a freestanding vanity sidesteps the whole conversation - it carries its own weight, so the only thing that matters is a level floor. It's also the easier retrofit if you're replacing an existing floor-mounted unit on the same footprint, since the plumbing's usually already set up for it. We'd lean wall hung for a fresh reno where the framing's still open, and freestanding for a like-for-like swap or a heritage-style bathroom where a floating cabinet would look out of place.

A stone top with undermount basin adds roughly $250-$450 over the equivalent cabinet-only price.
