What is a 'Tiles Off' Bathroom Renovation?
A tiles off renovation means stripping the existing tiles back to the substrate (the wall or floor base) before tiling. It's the more thorough approach and the one we'd suggest for most full bathroom renovations.
The advantages are that you can inspect and repair the waterproofing membrane, fix any substrate damage, and start fresh with a flat, properly prepared surface. It also means you're not adding tile thickness on top of existing tiles, which can cause issues with door clearances, floor heights, and fitting new fixtures.
The disadvantages are cost and time. Stripping tiles is labour-intensive, and there's always a risk of finding substrate damage that needs repair once the tiles come off. Budget for contingency.
We'd suggest tiles off for any renovation where the existing tiles are damaged, where there are signs of water damage or mould behind the tiles, or where you're making significant changes to the layout of fixtures.
