What is a 'Tiles On' Bathroom Renovation?

A tiles on renovation means tiling directly over the existing tiles rather than removing them first. It's faster and cheaper than a tiles off renovation, but it comes with limitations.

The main advantage is cost. You skip the labour of stripping tiles and the risk of finding substrate damage underneath. For a straightforward cosmetic refresh where the existing tiles are in good condition and the waterproofing is sound, tiles on can be a practical option.

The limitations are that you're adding height to the floor and depth to the walls, which can affect door clearances, floor transitions, and the fit of new fixtures like vanities and toilets. You also can't inspect or repair the waterproofing underneath, so if there are existing moisture issues, they'll continue.

We'd suggest tiles on only if the existing tiles are flat, well-adhered, and in good condition, and if the renovation is primarily cosmetic rather than a full refit.
