Outdoor products need to suit their installation environment as well as the way you'll use the space. Here's what we'd check before ordering.

• Material: For exposed kitchens, sinks and tapware, 316 marine-grade stainless steel is one of our preferred options, particularly near pools and coastal areas. Check the manufacturer's specifications for the complete product, including its finish and fittings.

• Exposure: Consider whether the product will be installed under a covered alfresco area or fully exposed to rain, sunlight and salt air. Not every indoor fitting is suitable for outdoor use.

• Plumbing: Confirm your hot and cold water supply, tap connections and drainage before choosing sinks, showers or mixers. Your plumber can check the requirements for your layout.

• Space and dimensions: Measure the available bench space, cabinetry and clearances. For outdoor kitchens, check sink cabinet requirements and mixer spout reach. For showers, allow enough room for comfortable use and drainage.

• Electrical requirements: Check the outdoor suitability and IP rating of lighting and electrical products. A licensed electrician can confirm the correct installation location and requirements.

• Finishes: Coordinate stainless steel, brushed nickel, brushed gold, brushed bronze and darker finishes across your outdoor fixtures. Always confirm the finish is rated for the intended environment.
