Best Smart Toilets in Australia: Features, Costs and What to Look For in 2026

Smart toilets are becoming a must-have in modern Australian bathrooms, combining comfort, hygiene, and tech-driven design. Here are the best options right now.

What makes a smart toilet different from a traditional toilet?

A smart toilet - also called an intelligent toilet or bidet toilet - integrates the wash functions of a bidet seat with a full toilet suite in a single vitreous china unit. Where a traditional toilet suite requires a separate bidet seat retrofit, a smart toilet comes with everything built in: warm water wash, heated seat, dryer, rimless flush bowl, and automatic or remote-controlled operation. The result is a cleaner profile, no visible bidet attachment, and a single water connection rather than two.

The question we get most at the showroom: "is it just a bidet seat on a toilet?" No - a smart toilet is a single integrated unit. The bidet function is built into the pan itself. A bidet seat is a separate product that retrofits onto an existing standard toilet suite. Both have their place, but they're different products at different price points.

Shop smart toilets by installation type

  • Wall hung toilets - pan mounts to an in-wall frame and cistern; floor is clear underneath for easier cleaning; requires a concealed in-wall cistern rough-in before tiling; most common in new builds and full renovations

  • Back to wall toilets - pan sits flush to the wall with cistern concealed in a wall cavity or built-in unit; cleaner look than a close-coupled suite, floor-mounted for simpler installation than wall hung

  • Floor mount / wall faced - pan sits on the floor with a P-trap outlet; the most common installation type in Australian homes; suits retrofits where the floor plumbing is already set

What to check before you buy a smart toilet

P-trap vs S-trap outlet

Most Australian homes use a P-trap (horizontal rear outlet). Confirm your outlet type and set-out distance with your plumber before selecting a model - smart toilets are harder to return than standard suites given their weight and size.

In-wall cistern compatibility

Wall hung smart toilets require an in-wall cistern frame installed before the wall is tiled. The frame brand must be compatible with the toilet pan - Argent pans pair with Argent 80mm smart cisterns; Villeroy & Boch ViSmart pans require the ViConnect cistern. Don't mix brands unless the spec sheet confirms compatibility. If your rough-in is already done, bring the cistern brand to us and we'll confirm what pans will fit.

This is the one that catches people out most often on wall hung smart toilets. The cistern frame gets installed months before the toilet is selected, and the plumber specifies a brand without flagging it to the client. By the time the toilet is being ordered, the frame is tiled in and the pan options are now limited to that brand's compatible range. If you're at rough-in stage, lock in the pan brand at the same time.

Power point requirement

Every smart toilet needs a GPO (power point) within reach of the unit - typically 300-500mm from the toilet, on the wall behind or beside it. This needs to be roughed-in before tiling. If your bathroom renovation doesn't include an electrician, add one to the scope before the tiles go on.

Flush buttons and flush plates

Wall hung smart toilets require a separate flush button or flush plate purchased independently. This is also where you select your finish - chrome, matte black, brushed brass, brushed nickel. Confirm the plate is compatible with your cistern brand before ordering.

WELS rating

All toilets sold at Buildmat meet Australian WELS water efficiency standards. Smart toilet suites typically carry a 4-star WELS rating with dual flush.

Vitreous china

All smart toilet pans in our range are vitreous china - the standard for Australian toilet suites. Vitreous china is non-porous, which matters more with smart toilets than standard suites because the integrated wash nozzles need a surface that doesn't harbour bacteria.

Smart toilet features explained

  • Rimless bowl. A rimless toilet has no inner rim ledge where bacteria and scale typically accumulate. The flush is directed around the bowl via a direct flush channel. All smart toilets in our range are rimless - it's standard at this price point because the whole product proposition is about hygiene.
  • Heated seat. Temperature-adjustable seat, typically with multiple settings. Most models include seat temperature memory so it returns to your preferred setting after each use.
  • Bidet wash - posterior and feminine. Warm water wash with adjustable pressure and temperature. Most models include both posterior and feminine wash modes, oscillating or pulsing wash options, and a self-cleaning nozzle that rinses before and after use.
  • Warm air dryer. Built-in dryer with adjustable temperature. Reduces or eliminates toilet paper use.
  • Remote control or panel operation. Most smart toilets include a wall-mounted panel or handheld remote. Some models also support app or voice control. Confirm whether the remote is included or purchased separately before ordering.
  • Automatic lid and flush. Motion-activated lid open/close and hands-free flushing. Standard on higher-end models; optional on mid-range.
  • Night light. Soft ambient light activated by motion - useful for night visits without switching on overhead lights.

Smart toilet prices at Buildmat

Entry-level smart toilet suites start from around $1,000 (Caroma Urbane II). Mid-range models - Lafeme Crawford, Lafeme Sesto, Johnson Suisse Listo - sit between $3,500 and $4,000. Premium fully-featured units with advanced sensors and full remote operation run up to $6,499. Factor in installation: wall hung and in-wall cistern setups cost more to install than floor-mounted units because they require additional wall work and plumbing access. Budget for an electrician to run the GPO if it's not already in place.

Shop smart toilets by brand

  • Caroma smart toilets: Caroma is the most widely specified Australian brand for smart toilets. The Urbane II is the accessible entry point - rimless, wall faced, with integrated bidet wash functions. Caroma smart toilet suites pair directly with Caroma SwitchMix cistern systems and Caroma flush buttons for a fully coordinated finish. Lead-free certified across the range.
  • Lafeme smart toilets: Lafeme covers the mid-to-premium bracket. The Crawford and Sesto are their main smart toilet lines - both wall faced with full bidet functionality, heated seats, warm air dryer, remote control, and rimless flush. The Autolux sits at the top of the range with advanced motion sensing and full remote operation.
  • Argent smart toilets: Argent's Evo range covers both wall hung and floor-mounted smart toilet configurations. The wall hung Evo pairs with the Argent 80mm in-wall smart cistern. The ViSmart version pairs with the Villeroy & Boch ViConnect in-wall cistern. Both include heated seats, remote control, rimless flush, user detection sensors, and night light. Flush plates are purchased separately.
  • Johnson Suisse smart toilets: Johnson Suisse's Listo Smart Toilet is a compact wall faced option suited to smaller bathrooms. Rimless vitreous china, self-cleaning nozzles, warm water wash, and automatic flushing. A practical mid-range choice for renovators who want smart features without a premium price tag.

Visit the Buildmat Selection Centre

Smart toilets are one of the harder purchases to make from product photos alone - the integrated seat profile, the weight and depth of the pan, and the quality of the remote control all read very differently in person. Our Buildmat Selection Centre in Hughesdale is open by appointment, Monday to Friday, and stocks display models you can see installed. Our Dandenong showroom is also open Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm.

Not in Melbourne? We ship Australia-wide. Call or email with your bathroom plans - including your existing outlet type, set-out distance, and whether a GPO is in place - and we can advise on compatible models before you order. 1300 123 122 | [email protected]

FAQS

Most smart toilets use a standard P-trap outlet compatible with Australian plumbing. Confirm your set-out distance before ordering - this varies between models. S-trap (bottom outlet) options are available but less common in the smart toilet category; check individual product specs.
Yes. Every smart toilet requires a GPO within reach of the unit. In most bathrooms this means running a new circuit before the tiles go on. This is licensed electrical work - budget for it as part of your renovation scope.
Floor-mounted wall faced smart toilets are the most retrofittable option - they use existing floor plumbing and only require a nearby GPO. Wall hung smart toilets require an in-wall cistern frame, which means wall and tiling work. If you're not doing a full reno, a floor-mounted model or a bidet seat retrofit onto your existing toilet suite is the simpler path.
The terms are used interchangeably in Australia. A smart toilet is a fully integrated unit - toilet pan and bidet wash system in one. A bidet seat is a separate product that retrofits onto a standard toilet pan. Smart toilets are a single piece of vitreous china; bidet seats sit on top of an existing suite.
Easier than standard toilets. The rimless bowl eliminates the ledge where scale and bacteria accumulate, and the self-cleaning wash nozzle retracts and rinses automatically. The main cleaning task is wiping the exterior of the pan and the seat - no rim scrubbing required.
