Buying a toilet pan usually means one thing: matching a replacement to your existing plumbing, or picking the right combination for a new bathroom. Here's what to check before you order.

Choose your toilet pan mounting style

  • Wall faced: the pan sits on the floor with its back against the wall, connecting to a cistern mounted behind it. The most common setup in Australian bathrooms.
  • Wall hung: the pan is fixed to a wall-mounted frame and doesn't touch the floor at all, which makes cleaning underneath easier. Needs an in-wall cistern.
  • Pedestal: the pan stands on the floor and the cistern sits on top or connects separately (close coupled).

Match the trap and waste position

Getting this wrong means a pan that won't line up with your drain, so check your current waste position first:

  • S trap: waste outlet exits through the floor. The standard setup in most homes.
  • P trap: waste outlet exits through the wall. Common in renovations where the drain runs behind the pan.
  • Skew trap: an angled waste connection, used where the drain isn't lined up with a standard trap.

Trap type isn't something you can change after installation, so measure or check with your plumber before buying.

Rimless vs rim pans

Rimless pans have no hidden rim around the inside of the bowl, so the flush washes the whole surface clean and there's nowhere for grime to sit. Rim pans use a more traditional flush pattern. If low-maintenance cleaning is the priority, go rimless.

Accessible and long drop pans

  • Accessible pans sit higher than a standard pan for easier use and are available in wall faced or pedestal mounts, with S trap or P trap options.
  • Long drop pans suit older plumbing layouts and connect to drop-style waste rather than a standard trap, useful in older homes or commercial fit-outs.

Toilet pan connectors

If you're keeping your existing waste pipe and just replacing the pan, a pan connector links the new pan's outlet to the old plumbing. Match the connector to your pan's trap type and pipe diameter before you buy.

Finish and colour

White is the standard finish across most pans. Some ranges also come in matte finishes, including additional shades for a design match to tapware or tiles.

What's included and what isn't

Some pans come with a seat included, check the title for "with seat". If not, you'll need one from toilet seats & hinges, or a bidet toilet seat for added function. Pans don't include a cistern, so pick a matching toilet cistern and toilet button to suit. Finish the room with a toilet roll holder, toilet brush and holder, or browse toilet fixtures & accessories for the rest.

FAQS

An S trap sends waste out through the floor, a P trap sends it out through the wall. Check your current pipe position before ordering, as pans are made for one or the other.
A rimless pan has no hidden rim inside the bowl, so the flush cleans the full surface with no gaps for grime to build up. It's a cleaning advantage over a traditional rim design.
Some pans include a seat, check the product title for "with seat". None include a cistern, so you'll need to choose a compatible cistern and, if not supplied, a seat separately.
