Caroma Urbane II Bidet Cleanflush Invisi Series II Wall Faced Toilet Suite

Choosing a toilet might not be glamorous, but getting it right makes a big difference to comfort, cleaning, and how your bathroom looks. Here's what to think about.

1. Measure your space carefully

Measure from the wall to your existing waste outlet (the centre of the pipe) – this is your "set-out" distance, usually 90mm, 120mm or 150mm in Australia. Also measure how much space you have side-to-side and front-to-back, especially if it's a small bathroom. You need enough room to sit comfortably and open the door.

2. Choose your toilet style

• Back-to-wall toilets: Sit flush against the wall with a concealed cistern for a sleek, modern look that's easier to clean around.
• Wall-hung toilets: Mount to the wall with the cistern hidden inside – looks minimal, saves floor space, and makes cleaning underneath easy.
• Close-coupled toilets: The cistern sits directly on the pan – practical, affordable, and easy to install or replace.

3. Pick a flushing system

Look for a dual-flush system (3L/4.5L or similar) to save water. Some toilets also have rimless or special flushing technology that cleans better and stays hygienic longer, which is worth considering if you want less scrubbing.

4. Match the style to your bathroom

White toilets are classic and suit any style. Soft-close seats are quieter and feel nicer. If you're going modern or minimal, a wall-hung or back-to-wall design looks cleaner. Traditional bathrooms work well with close-coupled suites.

6. Consider smart features

Want extra features? Smart toilets and bidet toilets offer built-in washing, heated seats, and more – perfect if you're after extra comfort and hygiene.

7. Don't forget the flush button

Your toilet flush button is part of the look, especially for in-wall cisterns. Choose a finish that matches your tapware and accessories.

8. Set your budget

Basic close-coupled toilets start around $300–$600. Back-to-wall and wall-hung suites with concealed cisterns sit between $600–$1,500+, depending on brand and features. Installation costs vary depending on complexity, so chat with your plumber early.

Bidet toilets have gone from a niche luxury to one of the fastest-growing bathroom upgrades in Australia. Here's a quick guide to everything you need to know about these toilets.

What does a bidet toilet do?

A bidet toilet combines a standard toilet with a built-in wash function – using a warm water spray to clean you after using the toilet, replacing or reducing your need for toilet paper. Depending on the model, it can also include a warm air dryer, heated seat, deodoriser, and more. Once you've used one regularly, it's hard to go back.

Who is it best suited to?

A bidet toilet tends to suit people who:

• Want a more hygienic and thorough clean after toileting
• Have mobility limitations or find reaching difficult
• Are doing a full bathroom renovation and want to invest in long-term comfort
• Use a lot of toilet paper and want to reduce ongoing costs
• Simply want a more premium, modern bathroom experience

If you're renting, renovating on a tight budget, or not ready for a full toilet replacement, a bidet toilet seat or bidet mixer tap is a much more accessible way to get started.

What are the different types of bidet toilets?

There are three main ways to add bidet functionality to your bathroom, each at a different price point and level of integration:

• Bidet mixer tap (handheld spray): Attaches to your existing toilet water supply. No power needed, low cost, easy to retrofit. Great if you want the basics without any fuss.
• Bidet toilet seat: Replaces your existing seat and adds electronic wash functions. Requires a power outlet nearby. Fits most standard pans — just check round vs elongated compatibility first.
• Integrated bidet toilet (smart toilet): A complete toilet suite with bidet built in. The most seamless, premium option – ideal for a full renovation.

Installing a bidet toilet

Electric bidet seats and integrated bidet toilets both need a switched GPO within reach of the toilet – ideally within about 1 metre. If you don't have one, an electrician will need to install one. This is straightforward when walls are already open during a renovation, but adds cost if you're retrofitting. Handheld bidet sprays need no power at all.

Will it suit your existing toilet?

If you're adding a bidet seat to an existing toilet rather than replacing it, measure your pan first. Most seats fit either round or elongated pans – getting this wrong means the seat won't fit or won't look right. If you're doing a full renovation, an integrated bidet toilet removes this issue entirely and gives you a cleaner result.

How much is a bidet toilet?

• Handheld bidet sprays: From around $50–$150
• Bidet toilet seats: From around $150 for basic models up to $800+ for full-featured electric seats
• Integrated bidet toilets: From around $1,500, up to $5,000+ for premium smart toilet models

Factor in any electrical work needed, plus installation by a licensed plumber for the toilet itself.
