Telbix Rye 20 Solid Brass Exterior Wall Light Brass

Good outdoor lighting makes your home safer, extends your living space, and shows off your garden beautifully. Here's how to choose the right outdoor lights for your space.

1. Think about what you need lighting for

Do you want to light pathways for safety? Highlight your garden or architecture? Create ambience on your deck or patio? Or add security around entry points? Most homes need a mix of these – practical lighting where you walk, and accent lighting to make outdoor spaces feel welcoming.

2. Choose your light type

• Outdoor wall lights: Mount beside doors, on walls, or under eaves for entry lighting and security – essential for most homes.
• Flood lights: Bright, wide-angle lights for driveways, backyards, or anywhere you need strong, practical light or security.
• Garden lights: Low-level lights that highlight garden beds, pathways, or landscape features beautifully.
• Outdoor floor lights: Sit at ground level to light paths, steps, or deck edges – practical and subtle.
• Outdoor inground lights: Recessed into paths, driveways, or decking for a clean, modern look that doesn't take up space.

3. Plan for safety and function first

Light pathways, steps, driveways, and entry points so everyone can move around safely at night. Outdoor wall lights beside doors and outdoor floor lights along paths handle this beautifully. Once safety is covered, you can add accent lighting for style.

4. Add ambience to outdoor living areas

If you have a deck, patio, or outdoor entertaining space, softer lighting makes it feel like an extension of your home. Garden lights around the edges, wall lights on the house, or string lights overhead all work beautifully to create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

5. Consider sensor and timer options

Motion sensor lights are brilliant for security and convenience – they only turn on when needed, saving energy. Timer switches let you automate outdoor lighting so it comes on at dusk and turns off at dawn, or whenever you choose.

6. Choose weather-resistant fittings

All outdoor lights need to handle weather, so look for IP ratings of IP44 or higher (IP65+ is better for very exposed areas). This means the lights can handle rain, dust, and temperature changes without issues. Quality outdoor lights last years even in harsh Australian conditions.

7. Set your budget

Basic outdoor wall lights start around $50–$150 each. Flood lights sit between $60–$200. Garden lights and inground lights range from $40–$150+ per fitting, depending on quality and design. Installation costs vary depending on how many lights you're adding and whether wiring is already in place.
