Shop black basin mixers by type

Matching the right mixer type to your basin is critical for both aesthetics and functionality.

  • Tall basin mixer: Also known as a tower basin mixer. These feature an extended body designed specifically to sit on the vanity benchtop and reach over the high rim of above counter basins or countertop basins.
  • Standard basin mixer: The traditional single lever mixer. Designed to be mounted directly onto the tap hole of an inset, undermount basin, or semi recessed basin.
  • Wall-mounted mixers: A minimalist choice where the spout and mixer dial are installed directly into the wall above the basin. This setup saves valuable bench space and pairs beautifully with wall hung basins.
  • Hob basin mixer: A traditional three-piece setup where the hot tap, cold tap, and spout are mounted separately on the benchtop (the hob).

What to check before you buy

  • Clearance height: If you are buying a tall basin mixer, ensure the spout height clears the rim of your chosen bathroom basin with enough room underneath to comfortably wash your hands.

Complete the matte black look

A black basin mixer looks best when the entire bathroom hardware schedule matches perfectly.

  • Basin wastes: You must pair your black basin mixer with a matching matte black pop-up waste. Mixing a black tap with a standard chrome waste instantly breaks the visual design.
  • Bottle traps: If your plumbing is exposed beneath a wall hung basin, upgrade the standard white PVC pipe to a matte black bottle trap.
  • Bathroom accessories: Carry the matte black finish through to your single towel rails, double towel rails, and robe hooks.
  • Showers and baths: Complete the room with a matching matte black shower head, rail and a black bath spout.
  • Black towel rails: Heated towel rails, single and double towel bars in matte black.

Black basin mixer prices at Buildmat

Our range starts at under $100 for entry-level clearance mixers, making it easy to outfit a laundry or secondary bathroom without breaking the budget. Mid-range matte black basin mixers from brands like Fienza and Nero sit in the $200 to $350 range and represent the sweet spot for most residential renovations, offering solid brass construction, a durable electroplated finish, and a smooth single lever action. At the premium end, designer ranges from Meir, Caroma Liano II, and Villeroy & Boch sit above $400 and deliver a noticeably heavier feel, tighter tolerances, and a more refined matte black finish that holds its colour for longer. If you are specifying tapware across a full bathroom renovation, it is worth investing in the mid-to-premium tier to ensure the finish does not degrade over time.

Alternatives to matte black basin mixers

If you love the dark, architectural look but want something slightly different, consider exploring our gunmetal or brushed bronze ranges. Alternatively, brushed brass or antique brass offers a warmer contrast, while polished chrome remains the timeless standard.

Black basin mixer inspiration

FAQS

Yes, and it is not going anywhere soon. Matte black has been the dominant tapware finish in Australian bathrooms for nearly a decade, and it continues to be the most specified finish in new builds and renovations. It works beautifully against white tiles, concrete-look surfaces, timber vanities, and dark stone benchtops. If you are in a small bathroom with limited natural light, brushed nickel or brushed brass will make the space feel warmer and lighter — but in most bathrooms, matte black is a confident, timeless choice.
This is the most common mistake we see. A standard short basin mixer will not clear the high rim of an above counter basin — the spout ends up below the rim and water misses the bowl. You need a tall basin mixer (also called a tower basin mixer) with enough height to reach over the rim and deliver water into the basin. Measure your basin rim height before ordering, or switch to a wall-mounted mixer where the height is controlled by the rough-in position.
