Trim Kits
Shopping for a trim kit means you already have the rough-in body installed and need the visible finishing parts, the plate, spout, lever or mixer body that sits on the wall or bath. Use this guide to work out which kit fits your setup.
What's in a trim kit box
Trim kits vary by product, but most include some combination of:
- A cover plate or escutcheon that sits flush against the wall or bath
- The visible mixer body, lever or handle
- A spout (in a fixed length, when specified in the title)
- Internal spindles or cartridges, where the kit is sold as a spindle-only set
Always check the product tile for "trim kit only" or "fit-off kit" wording. These sets do not include the rough-in valve or body, so they only suit installations where that part is already in place.
Matching spout length and configuration
Wall-mounted basin and bath sets are often sold in a few spout lengths, commonly around 160mm, 185mm and 220mm. A longer spout throws water further from the wall, which matters for basin bowl depth or bath width. Measure from the wall to where you want the water to land before choosing.
Some sets also come as pin-up configurations, which raise the handle position rather than sitting flush. Check whether your existing rough-in was set up for a standard or pin-up finish, as the two are not always interchangeable.
Choosing the right kit type
Look for the fixture type in the title to narrow your search:
- Basin/bath mixer sets, for wall-mounted basins and bath fillers
- Shower/bath diverter mixers, where one control switches water between shower and bath outlet
- Shower/wall mixers, for a shower-only wall control
- Spindle-only sets, for replacing worn internals without changing the visible finish
If you're finishing a new bath install, pair your kit search with baths and bathtubs to check spout reach against your chosen tub.
Picking a finish
Trim kits come in a range of finishes, including chrome, matte black, matte white, brushed nickel, brushed gold, brushed bronze, brushed brass and gunmetal. Chrome is the easiest to match across brands and eras. Brushed and matte finishes show fewer fingerprints but can vary slightly between ranges, so stick to the same series if you're finishing off multiple points in one bathroom.
Confirming compatibility before you buy
Trim kits are built to fit a specific rough-in body or valve, usually from the same series or brand. Before ordering:
- Check the product title against the rough-in model already in your wall or bath
- Confirm the spindle or cartridge type matches, if buying a spindle-only kit
- Note whether the kit lists as lead free, relevant for some plumbing approvals
- Match spout length to your basin, vanity or bath layout
If you're still selecting a basin to go with your trim kit, browse bathroom vanities for options that suit a wall-mounted mixer set.
