A matte white kitchen mixer that blends in or stands out

Matte white is the finish for kitchens where the tap shouldn't compete with the stone, the joinery or the view. Against a white benchtop or a white kitchen sink, it all but disappears. Against timber, terrazzo or a darker benchtop, it becomes a soft, graphic feature. What we'd check before you buy

• Lead times on special-order finishes. Some matte white Billi systems are special-order finishes and can take up to three weeks to dispatch. If your kitchen is on a tight install schedule, order them early.
• Matching your benchtop white. Matte white isn't one colour. Next to a warm Calacatta-look stone, some whites read cool and almost blue. Next to a crisp engineered stone, others look slightly creamy. In the showroom, we always suggest holding your benchtop sample against the tap before deciding.
• What leaves a mark. Matte white hides water spots, but tea, coffee and turmeric can show if they're left to dry. A quick wipe after cooking keeps it bright. Skip abrasive pads, bleach and acidic descalers, which can dull the finish.
• Clearance around the spout. Tall goosenecks and pull downs need room above the sink. Check the space under any window sill, overhead shelf or rangehood before choosing the tallest model.
• Tap hole and hose space. Most deck-mounted mixers in this range fit a standard 35mm tap hole. Pull out models also need a clear path under the sink for the hose to retract.
