What We'd Check Before You Buy

Kitchen lighting needs to work for cooking, cleaning and entertaining. Here's what we'd check before choosing your fittings.

• Kitchen island size: Choose your pendant lights based on the length and width of your island bench. A linear pendant light can work well over a long island, while two or three smaller pendants can provide more evenly spaced illumination.

• Pendant height: Check the ceiling height and adjustable drop length before ordering. Kitchen island pendant lights are commonly positioned around 600-750mm above the benchtop, with final placement depending on the fitting and sightlines.

• Task lighting: Make sure your main food preparation areas have enough direct light. Downlights or adjustable spotlights can help illuminate benchtops, while under-cabinet lights can provide additional task lighting beneath overhead cupboards.

• Colour temperature: Warm white around 3000K creates a softer atmosphere, while neutral white around 4000K provides a clearer light for cooking and preparation. Tri-colour LED fittings let you select the colour temperature to suit your kitchen.

• Dimming and globes: Check whether your chosen light is dimmable and whether it uses an integrated LED or replaceable globes. If you're installing a dimmer, confirm compatibility with the fitting.

• Ceiling space: Recessed lights need the correct ceiling cut-out and installation clearance. For pendant lights, check the ceiling fixing requirements and the weight of the fitting before installation.

Kitchen lighting prices vary depending on the fitting type, size, materials and number of lights.

Our LED downlights start from around $12 per fitting, making them an affordable option for general kitchen lighting. Single pendant lights start from approximately $60-$100, while larger glass pendants, linear designs and multi-light fittings generally range from $200 to $600.

Statement chandeliers and larger decorative pendant lights can cost $800 or more, depending on the design. These are general product prices and exclude installation.
