Shop indoor lighting by type
- Pendant lights & Chandeliers: Suspended fixtures that draw the eye. From linear island pendants for task lighting in the kitchen to multi-light chandeliers for a grand entrance, this is where you make a statement.
- Ceiling lights & Oyster lights: Surface-mounted flush fittings that sit close to the ceiling. A practical, low-profile choice for bedrooms, laundries, and spaces with lower ceiling heights.
- Downlights & Ceiling spotlights: Recessed LED wall lights & downlights provide clean, even general illumination across a whole room, while adjustable surface-mounted spotlights let you direct the beam exactly where you need it.
- Indoor wall lights & Sconces: Wall-mounted fixtures for layering light. Up & down lights add architectural interest in hallways, while adjustable reading lights and vanity wall lights serve specific functional needs.
- Table lamps & Floor lamps: Plug-and-play accent lighting. Perfect for adding warmth to a living room or setting up a dedicated reading nook without needing to call an electrician.
- Staircase lights & Night lights: Low-level recessed lights or surface-mounted fittings designed to safely illuminate steps and hallways at night without turning on the main overheads.
What we'd consider before you buy indoor lights
Lighting layers. A common mistake we see is relying entirely on a grid of LED downlights to light a room. The best spaces use three layers: ambient (downlights or oyster lights for general brightness), task (pendant lights over an island or vanity wall lights), and accent (floor lamps, table lamps, or wall sconces to create mood). Planning all three layers before the plaster goes up saves a lot of headaches later.
Colour temperature. For living rooms, bedrooms and relaxed spaces, warm white (typically 3000K) is the standard – it feels inviting and soft. For kitchens, bathrooms, and task-heavy areas, a cooler neutral white (4000K) provides better clarity. Many of our Telbix LED downlights and batten fix lights feature Tri-Colour (3CCT) technology, meaning your electrician can switch between warm, neutral, and cool white via a toggle on the back of the fitting during installation.
IP ratings for bathrooms. If you're buying indoor lighting for a bathroom, check the IP rating. Any fitting installed in a splash zone (like a vanity wall light near a basin or a downlight above a shower) needs an IP44 rating or higher to comply with Australian wiring rules. Standard dry-area fittings should stay in the bedroom or living room.
Integrated LED vs. replaceable globes. Many modern fixtures use an integrated LED panel. They offer incredibly slim profiles and are highly energy-efficient, but the light source itself cannot be changed if it eventually fails. If you prefer the flexibility of swapping out a blown globe or upgrading to smart lighting bulbs later, stick to traditional fittings that take standard E27, B22, or G9 globes.
Indoor lighting prices at Buildmat
Basic LED downlights, oyster lights, and simple batten fix fittings start from around $10 to $60. Mid-range wall sconces, single pendants, and adjustable spotlights run from around $70 to $180. Large architectural pendants, multi-light chandeliers, and premium floor lamps sit at the top of the range, from around $200 up to $600+. Remember to factor in the cost of a licensed electrician for all hardwired fittings.
Finish the whole space
Lighting finish decisions rarely happen in isolation — once you've committed to matte black or antique brass fixtures, you'll want the same finish running through your door handles, cabinet handles, and tapware. It's the kind of thing that's easy to overlook mid-reno and harder to fix once everything is installed. Telbix's range is broad enough that you can usually match a lighting finish across pendant, wall, and ceiling fittings — and we stock the hardware to carry it through the rest of the house.
