Choosing a dishwasher comes down to how it fits your kitchen and how it looks once it's in. Here's what to check before you buy.
Freestanding or integrated
- Freestanding dishwashers stand on their own and show their front panel. They suit kitchens where you want to swap appliances easily or don't have built-in cabinetry ready.
- Integrated dishwashers sit behind a matching cabinet door. They suit kitchens where a flush, built-in look matters more than easy replacement.
Check your existing cabinetry opening before deciding. Integrated models need a cabinet door made to fit, while freestanding models just need power and a water point.
Finish and style
Freestanding models come in finishes like silver and black, so pick one that matches your other kitchen appliances or stands apart as a feature. Integrated models are hidden, so the finish only matters on the control panel edge that shows above the benchtop.
Size and capacity
Most dishwashers are a standard width, but place settings and basket layout vary between series. Think about:
- How many people you cook for daily
- Whether you regularly wash large pots, trays or platters
- How often you'll run a full versus a quick cycle
Series and features
Within a brand, series numbers (like 300 or 500) usually signal differences in wash programs, noise levels and rack flexibility. A higher series often means more program options and quieter operation, useful if your kitchen opens onto a living area.
Plumbing and fit-out basics
Before you order, confirm:
- Your water supply and drainage points are in the right spot
- Your power outlet is accessible once the unit is installed
- The dishwasher's height clears your benchtop and any handles
If you're finishing the rest of the kitchen at the same time, take a look at kitchen sinks, kitchen tap mixers and kitchen dishracks and drainboards to pull the space together. A water filter tap nearby is also worth considering if you're upgrading plumbing anyway.
