Design your perfect custom bathroom vanity

Every bathroom layout is unique, which is why a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works for a high-end renovation. At Buildmat, our custom bathroom vanities allow you to take complete control of your design. From choosing the perfect benchtop material and cabinet finish, you can create a custom bathroom vanity that perfectly balances everyday functionality with architectural style.

Whether you need a sleek, floating aesthetic or a robust, floor-standing unit with maximum storage, our customisation options ensure your vanity suits your space exactly how you want it.

Countless bathroom vanity customisation options

When you choose a custom vanity from Buildmat, you aren't just picking a cabinet off a shelf – you are designing a bespoke piece of furniture.

  1. Select Your Size & Configuration: We cater to every footprint. Choose a compact 600mm or 750mm unit for tight ensuites, a standard 900mm for family bathrooms, or stretch out with a luxurious 1200mm, 1500mm, or 1800mm double vanity to accommodate dual basin mixers and morning rushes. Choose between wall-hung designs to create the illusion of more space, or freestanding models to maximise internal storage.
  2. Choose Your Finish: Match your vanity to your broader bathroom palette. Opt for the natural warmth and texture of our timber vanities, the sleek minimalism of matte white, or the bold contrast of black oak.
  3. Premium Benchtops & Basins: Complete your custom bathroom vanity with a durable stone or solid surface benchtop. You can integrate a seamless basin, or choose a flat top to pair with your favourite above-counter basin and premium tapware.

Explore custom vanities for every bathroom

The foundation of any custom design is the cabinet configuration. The way the vanity sits in the room determines the plumbing requirements and the overall aesthetic.

  • Wall hung vanity: A wall mounted, floating vanity frees up floor space, making the bathroom feel larger and cleaning significantly easier. This is the most popular choice for modern, bespoke bathroom renovations.
  • Floor standing vanity: Also known as a freestanding vanity, these sit directly on the floor with a kickboard. They maximise internal storage space and are excellent for retrofitting, as they hide existing floor plumbing.
  • Double vanity: Custom made vanities with two basins. You can specify exactly how far apart the basins sit and how the drawers are arranged between them.
  • Powder room vanity: Custom designs tailored for tight spaces. You can specify reduced-depth cabinets or compact single bowl layouts that standard vanities can't accommodate.

Or explore custom vanities by size:

Each custom vanity can be tailored with your preferred finish, benchtop, and configuration to match your design vision.

Custom vanity finishes and vanity tops

Once you have the shape, you need to choose the materials. Custom bathroom vanities offer countless finish combinations.

  • Cabinet finishes: Choose from classic matte white and matte black polyurethane, highly durable textured laminate, or premium timber veneer finishes like American oak, natural oak, woodland oak, and walnut.
  • Stone benchtops: Upgrade your vanity tops to premium solid surface, Caesarstone, or SilkSurface tops. These engineered stone tops provide a weighty, luxurious feel and are available in marble-look and solid colour finishes.
  • Ceramic tops: For a seamless, easy-to-clean surface, choose an integrated ceramic top where the basin and benchtop are moulded as a single piece.
  • Cabinet only: If you are sourcing your own custom stone from a local stonemason, you can order your custom vanity as "cabinet only".

Custom vanity basin configurations

How the basin interacts with your custom benchtop completely changes the look of the unit.

  • Above counter basin: The basin sits entirely on top of the stone or timber benchtop, making a bold architectural statement.
  • Undermount basins: Installed underneath the stone top, creating a completely flat, seamless bench space that is incredibly easy to wipe down.
  • Semi-inset: The basin drops partially into the benchtop, leaving just the rim exposed. A great middle ground between above-counter and undermount.
  • Semi-recessed: The basin overhangs the front of the cabinet. This is a smart custom solution if you need a full-sized basin but only have room for a narrow vanity width.

What we'd check before ordering a custom vanity

A custom built vanity is made specifically for your bathroom, which means you need to get the details right before it goes into production. Here is what we check with our customers.

  • Plumbing location: Check if your plumbing comes through the floor or the wall. If it's in the floor, a floor standing vanity with a kickboard is the easiest option. If you want a wall hung vanity, you'll need a plumber to move the pipes into the wall cavity.
  • Tap hole placement: If you are ordering a stone top, you need to specify exactly where the tap holes should be drilled (e.g., 10 o'clock, 2 o'clock, or dead centre) and whether you need one or three tap holes. If you are using wall-mounted tapware, specify "no tap holes".
  • Drawer clearance: Custom bathroom cabinets often feature premium soft-close drawers and doors. Measure the space in front of the vanity to ensure the drawers won't hit the shower screen, toilet, or bathroom door when fully open.

Custom vanity prices at Buildmat

The price of a custom vanity depends heavily on the materials you choose. A custom-sized laminate cabinet with an integrated ceramic top is the most affordable entry point into bespoke joinery. Upgrading to timber veneer cabinet finishes, premium stone benchtops, and complex internal drawer configurations will push the price into the premium architectural bracket. While custom vanities cost more than off-the-shelf standard vanities, they are often significantly cheaper than hiring local bathroom cabinet makers in Melbourne to build a one-off unit from scratch.

Finish the whole bathroom

Your custom vanity is the centrepiece, but it needs the right supporting hardware to function perfectly.

  • Tapware: Pair your custom vanity with premium basin mixers in a finish that complements your cabinet hardware.
  • Shaving cabinets: Most of our custom vanity ranges offer matching custom shaving cabinets. You can specify the exact width to perfectly align with your vanity unit.
  • Mirror cabinets: If you want concealed storage without a full shaving cabinet, a mirrored cabinet gives you a sleek, frameless look with hidden shelving behind.
  • Toilets: Complete the bathroom with a wall hung or back-to-wall toilet suite in a style that matches your vanity aesthetic.
  • Towel rails: Choose a heated towel rail or a standard double towel rail in a finish that ties back to your tapware.
  • Robe hooks: A couple of well-placed robe hooks near the shower or vanity make a big practical difference. Match the finish to your towel rail and tapware for a cohesive hardware schedule.
