Caroma Care: built to the standard, not adapted to it afterwards

Buildmat supplies ambulant and accessible bathrooms for builders working to AS1428.1, aged care and NDIS home modification briefs, where grab rail height and toilet pan height aren't design choices, they're a compliance requirement checked against exact millimetres. Caroma Care is designed from the ground up to those dimensions, rather than a standard tapware or toilet range with a grab rail bolted on afterwards.

Ambulant toilet requirements are for people who can walk but have limited mobility, such as crutch, cane or walking frame users, and don't require the full wheelchair turning circle that a fully accessible facility does. That distinction is the reason Caroma splits its Care range into ambulant suites like the Care 660 Easy Height, and full accessible fitouts using the Care 800 Cleanflush with backrest, so builders aren't stuck retrofitting a wheelchair-accessible suite where an ambulant one was needed.

Caroma Care fixtures at Buildmat

  • Pin, Opal and Care Plus basin and shower mixers use an oversized care handle instead of a standard lever, easier to grip and operate for people with limited hand strength or dexterity.
  • Grab rails come in 90-degree and 140-degree angled configurations, in left-hand and right-hand side options to suit either wall.
  • Accessible shower sets with inverted T rail combine a vertical grab rail with a horizontal shower rail in one fitting, in left and right hand configurations.
  • Ambulant toilet suites, including the Care 660 Easy Height in back entry and bottom inlet, and the Care 400 Connector S-Trap suite, sit at the raised pan height ambulant and accessible facilities both require.
  • Care 800 Cleanflush suites with backrest step up to a full accessible fitout, available in White, Anthracite Grey and Sorrento Blue.
  • Optional care handles retrofit a standard Caroma basin or shower mixer with an easier-to-grip handle, without replacing the whole tap body.

What we'd check before you buy

  • Confirm left-hand vs right-hand configuration before ordering. Grab rails and inverted T rail shower sets aren't reversible on site, so this needs to match your actual room layout, not just be picked at random.
  • Check pan height and grab rail position against AS1428.1 before you finalise a design. Grab rails need to sit at 800–810mm above finished floor level, and accessible toilet pans need to sit at 460–480mm, so confirm these against your certifier's drawings rather than assuming any Care product is automatically compliant once installed.
  • Check S-trap vs back entry or bottom inlet before choosing a toilet suite. Care suites come in different connection types, so this needs to match your existing plumbing rough-in.
  • Ask whether the project needs an ambulant or a fully accessible fitout. These are different specifications, not two tiers of the same product, so getting this wrong early is the most expensive mistake to fix later.
