Top 8 Bathroom Trends for 2026, As Seen in New Builds and Luxury Renovations

Bidet toilets are mainstream, LED mirrors are baseline, and large-format tiles have replaced small tiles. Here are the 8 bathroom trends dominating new builds and luxury renovations across Australia.

Top 8 Bathroom Trends for 2026, As Seen in New Builds and Luxury Renovations

Working from our Melbourne showroom and speaking with hundreds of renovators, builders, and designers every month, we get a front-row seat to what's actually happening with Australian bathrooms trends in 2026. These aren't just trends we've read about online but actual requests we're fielding daily, the products flying off our shelves, and the installations our customers are sharing with us from their completed projects.

The Biggest Bathroom Trends in 2026

1. Bidet Toilets Have Gone Mainstream

This is the big one. Five years ago, maybe one in twenty customers asked about bidet functionality. Now? It's closer to one in three, and among our luxury renovation clients, it's standard. The combination of hygiene awareness and environmental consciousness has made bidet toilets a must-have rather than a nice-to-have.

What's interesting is the diversity of adoption. We're seeing bidet toilets specified in everything from compact powder rooms to sprawling master ensuites. The technology has also matured. Today's models offer heated seats, adjustable water pressure, warm air dryers, and even deodorising functions, all controlled by sleek side panels or remote controls.

What we're stocking: Our bidet toilet collection has expanded significantly to meet demand. We're seeing particularly strong interest in integrated models that maintain clean lines without external fixtures. Caroma bidets and smart toilets are particularly popular, offering the latest in sleek bidet technology and style.

2. Statement Bathroom Vanities Are the New Kitchen Island

The bathroom vanity has become a hero piece. Where we used to see standard cabinetry, we're now fielding requests for timber grain, fluted profiles, integrated handles and so on. Clients are treating the vanity as furniture, not just storage.

Size matters too. Even in modest bathrooms, people are prioritising vanity presence over excessive floor space. A well-proportioned 900mm vanity has an incredible impact without overwhelming the space. For smaller powder rooms and ensuites, our small bathroom vanity range has become surprisingly popular – compact doesn't mean compromised anymore.

What we're stocking: Our ADP vanities are moving particularly well for their contemporary Australian design, while our broader vanity collection offers everything from minimalist wall-hung units to statement freestanding vanities. The variety in finish options – from natural oak to matte black – reflects just how central the vanity has become to bathroom design.

3. Gunmetal Is the New Matte Black

The tapware landscape is shifting. While matte black tapware dominated for years, we're now seeing a significant move toward gunmetal finishes. This isn't just a subtle variation – it represents a maturing of Australian bathroom design away from the stark contrast of black toward something more nuanced and sophisticated.

What's driving this? Gunmetal offers the depth and drama that made matte black popular, but with a softer, more layered appearance. It reads differently depending on the light—sometimes charcoal, sometimes with subtle bronze or nickel undertones. It's also more forgiving with water marks and fingerprints, which was always matte black's Achilles heel.

We're also watching two interesting developments:

  1. People are mixing gunmetal tapware with other metal finishes like brushed brass or brushed nickel for accessories, creating layered, collected looks rather than matchy-matchy schemes.
  2. There's growing interest in premium gunmetal finishes where the PVD coating quality, the underlying material (solid brass vs. cheaper alternatives), and the finish texture all affect longevity and appearance. Educated buyers are asking specifically about these specifications now.

What we're stocking: Our Nero tapware collection now includes extensive gunmetal options, and we've expanded our Meir Australia range significantly – their gunmetal finishes are exceptionally durable, and customers appreciate the Australian design heritage. Fienza tapware also offers excellent value in the gunmetal category, particularly for full-home renovations where budget matters but quality can't be compromised. Alma is an emerging player known for its budget-friendly price point and exceptional quality, while Caroma remains a trusted and popular option.

    4. LED Mirrors Are Must-Haves

Five years ago, an LED mirror was a luxury upgrade. Today, it's baseline. The shift happened quickly—once people experienced the even, shadow-free lighting and the convenience of integrated demister pads, standard mirrors felt inadequate.

What's changed is the level of sophistication. Basic backlit mirrors have given way to models with adjustable colour temperature, motion sensors, digital clocks, and even Bluetooth speakers. We're also seeing larger formats—1500mm and 1800mm mirrors for double vanities are increasingly common.

What we're stocking: Our LED bathroom mirrors range covers everything from compact powder room mirrors to expansive wall-to-wall installations. The demister function is non-negotiable for most buyers – nobody wants to wipe down their mirror after every shower.

    5. The Return of the Freestanding Bath

Freestanding baths are back, but they're being specified more thoughtfully than in previous decades. We're seeing them in spacious master ensuites where they can anchor the room without crowding it, and crucially, they're being paired with separate showers rather than doubling as the only bathing option.

The aesthetic has shifted too. Overly ornate claw-foot tubs have largely given way to clean-lined contemporary designs—oval forms, straight-sided rectangular models, and back-to-wall styles that offer the freestanding look with more practical positioning. Matte finishes on the exterior are particularly popular, creating a softer, more integrated feel.

What we're stocking: Our bathtub collection has evolved to reflect these preferences. Modern geometries and versatile finishes are what buyers want—the bath needs to make a statement without overwhelming the space.

    6. Large-Format Tiles Are Winning

Tile sizing has shifted dramatically. The driver towards large format tiles is partly aesthetic—fewer grout lines create a cleaner, more expansive feel—but it's also practical. Large-format tiles mean faster installation and easier cleaning. We're seeing this across both budget-conscious renovations and high-end builds. The one caveat: proper substrate preparation becomes even more critical with large tiles, so we always recommend experienced installers.

Colour and finish trends are equally interesting. Natural stone looks—limestone, travertine, marble—remain popular, but we're watching terrazzo make a strong comeback, along with concrete-effect and textured tiles that add depth without pattern complexity.

What we're stocking: Our bathroom tiles collection has expanded significantly in the large-format category. We're also seeing strong interest in our broader tiles range for clients who want to carry a consistent material palette through from bathrooms into living areas.

    7. Architectural Hardware Is Being Considered as Carefully as Tapware

This one surprises people, but it's significant: door handles and bathroom accessories are being specified with the same attention as tapware. The days of afterthought builder's-grade handles are fading. Clients recognise that every touchpoint contributes to the overall feel of a space.

We're seeing requests for door handles and knobs finishes that coordinate with tapware—matte black Lockwood door handles paired with matte black Nero taps, for example. There's also growing appreciation for quality mechanisms. A well-engineered handle with smooth action and solid weight feels fundamentally different from a budget alternative, and people notice.

What we're stocking: Our Lockwood door handles remain the go-to for quality and reliability—they're Australian-made and the mechanism quality is exceptional. For clients after something more design-forward, our Momo handles offer European styling with the durability Australian conditions demand.

    8. Trusted Australian Brands Are Valued More Than Ever

This isn't strictly a design trend, but it's one of the most significant shifts we're observing: Australian buyers are increasingly prioritising local brands and local support. The pandemic highlighted supply chain vulnerabilities, and people learned the hard way that cheap imported products often come with impossible warranty claims and no local service.

Brands like Caroma, with local manufacturing and a national service network, have seen renewed appreciation. The same goes for Australian-designed collections like Meir, ADP, and Alma. Buyers are asking about WaterMark certification, WELS ratings, and local warranty support because they've realised these details matter when something goes wrong or when they need replacement parts in five years.

What we're stocking: This trend aligns perfectly with our curation philosophy. Our Caroma range offers Australian-engineered reliability. Meir Australia brings design credibility with local support. ADP vanities are designed here for Australian bathrooms. Alma delivers quality tapware and accessories with thoughtful design.

What Bathroom Trends Mean for Your Renovation

These trends reflect genuine shifts in how Australians want to live. Bathrooms are no longer purely functional spaces to rush through. They're spaces for morning rituals, evening wind-downs, and daily moments of quality.

The common thread through all eight trends is intentionality. Whether it's choosing a bidet toilet for hygiene and sustainability, selecting large-format tiles for a seamless aesthetic, or investing in quality door handles that feel substantial, today's buyers are making deliberate decisions based on how they actually want to use their bathrooms.

From our Melbourne selection centre and through our Australia-wide shipping, we're here to help you navigate these choices. Every product we stock is something we'd specify in our own homes – technically sound, aesthetically considered, and backed by brands we trust.

    FAQs

Are bidet toilets difficult to install?

Not at all. Most bidet toilets use your existing water supply and waste connections. A licensed plumber can typically complete the installation in a few hours. Some models require an electrical connection for heated seats and warm air dryers, but this is straightforward for an electrician.

Will gunmetal tapware go out of style quickly?

Gunmetal represents a maturing of bathroom design toward more nuanced, sophisticated finishes. Unlike trend-driven colours, gunmetal is a considered neutral that works across multiple design styles. Quality gunmetal tapware with proper PVD coating is a long-term investment that will remain current for years to come.

How do I choose the right vanity size for my bathroom?

Measure your existing vanity and available wall space, then consider going slightly larger if space allows. For smaller bathrooms, prioritise vanity presence over excessive floor space—a properly sized vanity anchors the room. Visit our selection centre where we can help you measure and visualise options for your specific space.

Do LED mirrors use a lot of electricity?

No. LED mirrors are extremely energy-efficient, typically using 15-30 watts – less than a traditional light bulb. Many customers leave them on constantly because the running cost is negligible, and having consistent task lighting is convenient.
