Choosing a toilet might not be glamorous, but getting it right makes a big difference to comfort, cleaning, and how your bathroom looks. Here's what to think about.

1. Measure your space carefully

Measure from the wall to your existing waste outlet (the centre of the pipe) – this is your "set-out" distance, usually 90mm, 120mm or 150mm in Australia. Also measure how much space you have side-to-side and front-to-back, especially if it's a small bathroom. You need enough room to sit comfortably and open the door.

2. Choose your toilet style

  • Back-to-wall toilets: Sit flush against the wall with a concealed cistern for a sleek, modern look that's easier to clean around.
  • Wall-hung toilets: Mount to the wall with the cistern hidden inside – looks minimal, saves floor space, and makes cleaning underneath easy.
  • Close-coupled toilets: The cistern sits directly on the pan – practical, affordable, and easy to install or replace.

3. Pick a flushing system

Look for a dual-flush system (3L/4.5L or similar) to save water. Some toilets also have rimless or special flushing technology that cleans better and stays hygienic longer, which is worth considering if you want less scrubbing.

4. Match the style to your bathroom

White toilets are classic and suit any style. Soft-close seats are quieter and feel nicer. If you're going modern or minimal, a wall-hung or back-to-wall design looks cleaner. Traditional bathrooms work well with close-coupled suites.

6. Consider smart features

Want extra features? Smart toilets and bidet toilets offer built-in washing, heated seats, and more – perfect if you're after extra comfort and hygiene.

7. Don't forget the flush button

Your toilet flush button is part of the look, especially for in-wall cisterns. Choose a finish that matches your tapware and accessories.

8. Set your budget

Basic close-coupled toilets start around $300–$600. Back-to-wall and wall-hung suites with concealed cisterns sit between $600–$1,500+, depending on brand and features. Installation costs vary depending on complexity, so chat with your plumber early.

Rimless toilets have become one of the most popular toilet upgrades in Australian bathrooms – and once you understand the difference between a rimless and rimmed toilet, it's hard to argue with the logic.

What is a rimless toilet?

A traditional toilet pan has a hollow rim running around the inside top of the bowl. Water flows through this rim during flushing to clean the bowl – but the rim itself is nearly impossible to clean properly. Bacteria, limescale, and grime build up inside it over time, out of sight and out of reach of your toilet brush.

A rimless toilet removes that ledge entirely. Water is directed straight onto the bowl surface in a targeted flush pattern that covers the full interior. No hidden rim means nothing to hide dirt, and the entire bowl surface is visible and accessible.

Who is it best suited to?

A rimless toilet is a straightforward upgrade that suits almost any household, but it's especially worth considering if you:

  • Want a genuinely easier toilet to keep clean day to day
  • Have kids
  • Are renovating and want a modern, clean-lined bathroom aesthetic
  • Care about hygiene and want to reduce bacteria build-up
  • Are tired of fighting with a toilet brush around a hidden rim

If you're replacing a toilet anyway as part of a renovation, choosing rimless over a traditional pan is a no-brainer — the price difference is minimal, and the hygiene benefit is real.

What suite type should you choose?

Rimless toilets are available across all the main toilet configurations, so you're not giving anything up by going rimless:

The rimless bowl is about hygiene; the suite type is about your bathroom layout and the look you're after. You can mix and match freely.

Is there any reason not to choose rimless?

Very few. The only real considerations are:

  • Price: Rimless toilets can sit slightly higher in price than the most basic traditional pans, but the gap has narrowed significantly as rimless has become mainstream. Most quality toilet ranges now include rimless as standard.
  • Flush pattern: Some people worry that without a rim to distribute water, the flush won't be as effective. In practice, modern rimless designs use directed jets that clean the bowl thoroughly — often better than a traditional rim flush.

There's no real downside to choosing rimless over traditional. It's simply a better design.

What else should you check before buying?

  • Seat: Check whether a seat is included. Soft-close seats are worth paying extra for — they last longer and are much quieter. Some models also offer quick-release seats that detach fully for deep cleaning.
  • Flush button: If you're choosing a back-to-wall or concealed cistern setup, you'll select a flush button or push plate separately. Match the finish to your tapware for a cohesive result.
  • WELS rating: Look for a 4-star water efficiency rating or above. A good rimless toilet should flush powerfully and completely on around 4.5L (half flush) and 6L (full flush).
  • Style: Rimless pans range from softly rounded to sharply architectural. Match the profile to the overall feel of your bathroom — a curved pan in a minimal bathroom can look out of place, and vice versa.

How much is a rimless toilet?

Quality rimless toilets typically range from around $400 to $1,500+, depending on the suite type, brand, and configuration. Wall-hung and concealed cistern setups carry additional cost for the in-wall frame and installation — factor this into your overall bathroom budget.
